This Freemason Ball seems to have been a social highlight of Alfretons calendar, held under the patronage of His Grace, the Duke of Devonshire and RW Prov GM of Derbyshire, and the Right Hon the Earl of Euston, Prov GM(Eng), the RW Bro H C Okeover, Esq, PGW (Eng) DPGM.

Entertainment was provided by Matlock Quadrille Band, who where very prominent artists in the area, under the leadership of Mr J H Barnes, who played at the finest events in Derbyshire, including the ceremony of the formal opening of the new drawing room at Matlocks Smedley’s Hydro

The Order of Mark Master Masons is an appendant order of Freemasonry and confers the degrees of Mark Man and Mark Master. The “Mark” referred to in the title of the Degree takes its name from the mark or symbol which the stonemasons used
to identify their own work, so that he may be entitled to receive his wages. These marks can still be found in many Cathedrals and similar buildings of architectural significance, some of which may be over 1000 years old.
